Analysis: Brooklyn nine-nine
Genres: Comedy, Crime, Sitcom
Country: USA
Language: English
Narrative structure: Linear
Storyline: "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" follows the exploits of hilarious detective Jake Peralta and his diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD's 99th Precinct. Captain Ray Holt takes over Brooklyn's 99th precinct, which includes Detective Jake Peralta, a talented but carefree detective who's used to doing whatever he wants. The other employees of the 99th precinct include Detective Amy Santiago, Jake's over achieving and competitive partner; Detective Rosa Diaz, a tough and kept to herself coworker; Detective Charles Boyle, Jake's best friend who also has crush on Rosa; Detective Sergeant Terry Jeffords, who was recently taken off the field after the birth of his twin girls; and Gina Linetti, the precinct's sarcastic administrator.
Analysis: The pilot episode is the episode where the main characters are introduced and the audience are given an inquiry as to what their personalities are and individual differences, which are fundamental “trademarks” of the characters that influence how they act throughout the show. Brooklyn 99 starts off with closeup shot and dramatic music, which allows the audience to focus on the character and what they're saying; this also is used to introduce the main character. Point of view shots are used to establish a third person view and to make the audience feel included as if they are present at the scene. These are often done with hand held shots and tracking. Hand held shots are used to elucidate a more authentic and unfiltered feel and provides a sense of reality. Throughout the pilot episode, there are simple jump cuts and zooms, and non-diagetic sound is used to link scenes together to avoid choppiness. Over the shoulder shots used for dialogue.

Screenplay ideas:
1) Documentary style short film- short film using hand held shots displaying a "day in the life" of the main character, shedding light on issues with school, family and friends.
2) "It was all a dream"- Short film of a dystopian fantasy including all the main characters dreams and hopes, as an element of escapism, however at the end of the short film the audience is informed that it was all a dream an none of it was real. 3) Case study- Short film reliving a real life case study, in which the main character will act as the main person in the case study and give an overview of what it is like to be them. Eg. a particular criminal, a victim of crime, a person who's been through a traumatic experience etc. 4) Narrative music video- Synergy of both a music video and a short film, in which the music has a message and there are parts of narration and talking to explain the situation and the message. An example of a narrative music video as such is Burna Boy and Stormzy- Real Life, in which elements of gang violence and the rough lives of teens in London are brought up. ( video on the right) |

Final Idea:
My final idea for this unit is to produce a short film based on the current situations of the Covid Pandemic.
