What is a music video?: So first things first, what is a music video? A music video is a short video to accompany a song, in order to give the audience and inquiry as to what the song represents.
Who has Director M worked with?: We have mainly worked with Hip hop and pop artists, our main focus is making visual music videos for popular hip hop songs. Examples of artists we’ve worked with include Travis Scott, J cole, Drake, Roddy Ricch, Cardi B, who has recently won a video music award for a music video our company filmed, and Rich the Kid.
Types of music videos: There are 4 main types of music videos: Narrative, performance, concept, and synergy music videos.
Narrative: Narrative music videos are music videos that tell a story, and stick to a specific story line, which directly relates to the song and the lyrics the artist is promoting. An example of this, is Joyner Lucas' "Ross Capicchioni", which is a rap music video based on the true story of an attempted murder.
Performance: In a performance based video, the artist is shown performing, whether that's dancing, lip syncing, or live concerts, they rarely have a specific message or any concept behind their music video, and are a cheaper alternative for music videos. A great example of this, is Labrinth’s Jealous; where the music video focuses on the artist, displaying his emotions as he sings the song about heartbreak.
Concept: Concept music videos are usually based around a theme, such as a social or political issue, these music videos largely consist of symbolism and images which support the lyrics. An example of a concept music video is Question Time, by Dave, which is a music video based on worldwide issues to do with war, and government issues in Britain.
Synergy: Last but not least, Synergy music videos are where two or more forms of media collaborate to make a promotional video which usually promotes both artists of the song, and a film the song is featured in. This is usually done with music videos in which the music is used in a movie. A great example of this, is the music video for "Go Off" by Quavo. Lil Uzi and Travis Scott, where the soundtrack for this music video is used for the movie "The Fate of the Furious", one of the fast and the furious movies.
History of music videos: At Director M, we believe that understanding the history of music videos is essential, to make the best music video possible at this day and age. The earliest music videos were created in the 1900's. Tony Bennett claims he created the first music video named ''Stranger in Paradise'', as he filmed himself whilst in London, walking in Hyde Park, with his song playing in the video. History was made when MTV, the first ever 24h video music channel launched onto everyone's television sets on the 1st of august, 1981 when MTV played their first ever ironic song ''Buggles - Video Killed the radio star''
1900’s: Disney wanted to be the leading producers, and gained worldwide popularity when they release “Fantasia”. “Fantasia” was the world's first animated imagery with music played with it, which arguably makes it the first ever music video.
1940’s: Tony Bennett claims to have made the first ever music video with his song “Stranger in Paradise” where he filmed himself walking in Hyde Park, London, with his song playing in the background.
1980’s: MTV was introduced in 1981, and they broadcasted the Buggles - “Video killed the radio star”. Michael Jackson produced a music video for his song “Beat it” in 1982.
Today: Music videos are now a normality in the music industry, and gain recognition with things such as VMA awards. Effects and editing are often used in music videos. They Help the artist gain popularity and are available for almost every song nowadays.
Why make a music video?: So why should you make a music video? Making a music video is a wise choice for you, some reasons as to why we believe so is because it helps to tell the story of your song and evoke reaction, it allows the audience to remember your song, as the visuals will stick in their mind and be associated with the song, it allows you to show off your talents; so if you can dance, act or do certain tricks, a music video is a chance for you to show off those talents in association with your song, and it helps promote your image and expand your income. With more views, followers and fans, comes more popularity and income. A music video can make you and your song viral, and the amount of views you get on the music video will increase your income.
Snowball effect: So what is the snowball effect? In the music video industry, the snowball effect demonstrates the increase of popularity, as the video gets shared with more and more people until it becomes viral, starting with a minority audience, then emerging into a majority. This is particularly illustrated with new coming artists, who may not have a large following and fan base yet. The main 3 steps of the snowball effect is that the audience members view the video and enjoy it, the viewer then shares it with other friends that may enjoy it, and finally, the new viewers will further share the music video, either with more friends or online, increasing the popularity and making the video trending or viral. As views and popularity goes up, income also comes up. Increase in popularity of the artist, can help get them features and followers, bettering their image in the music industry, this could be you!
Distribution: Distribution; distribution is the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients. Distribution in the music industry is very important, as it helps get your music and music video out to a wider worldwide audience, increasing the popularity. Music was distributed over radio and TV in the past, with distributors such as MTV in the 80’s, however nowadays it's much easier to distribute music, with companies such as YouTube, Anghami, Soundcloud, Spotify, and iTunes. Our company will ensure that the music video we make for you will be distributed to a wide audience, with the help of Spotify, our official sponsor, to ensure you can have the opportunity to be noticed and gain fans.
Demographics: Last but not least, demographics. Demographics are an essential part in music video production, as they allow you to make the best suitable music video for your audience. Here at Director M, we focus on pop, hip hop and rap music videos; we need to ensure we take demographics into consideration, to make sure the music videos we produce suit the target audience for those genres. The main demographics we take into consideration at Director M are age, gender, and socio-economic status.
Thank you for listening, and hopefully we will see you soon to work with you! If you need any more information or have any questions, you may contact us on our Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or Weebly, @DirectorM
